D-E expresses sympathy to the family of Laurel Axelrod Spielberg, who passed away on May 8, 2020. Laurel fought a courageous battle with ovarian cancer and endured close to 30 surgeries.
After graduating from Dwight in 1965, Laurel embarked on an impressive academic and professional career. She achieved her BA in Sociology from Douglas College, Rutgers University (1969); her MA from University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration (1971); her MPH (Masters of Public Health) from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1976); and her DrPH (Doctor of Public Health) from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1981).
Professionally, Laurel worked as a Medical Social Worker and moved into public health as an epidemiologist/faculty/program director in academe and public health departments in both Canada and United States.
Laurel is survived by her husband, Stephen P. Spielberg, MD, PhD, and her sons David Spielberg, MD and Jeffery Spielberg and daughter in law Caroline Spielberg; as well as her siblings, Sherry Axelrod Greenwald ’68and William D. Axelrod ’73.
